Is your iPhone 4S draining the battery quickly?

I heard about the issue before purchasing the new iPhone, which I received 8 Nov.

My iPhone is fine; unless I have reminders set. The battery will then drop faster, too fast.
I opened Settings, clicked Location Services, and turned off Reminders; things returned to normal.

Is this the issue? Too early to tell. Just a theory.

[Apple has apparently discovered the culprit, and is preparing has a fix….]

Avatron Air Display driver issue under Mac OSX: Lion.

As mentioned at the bottom of the Avatron site

The Air Display host software runs well on Lion, but has this limitation: the built-in video driver on certain 2008 and 2009 Macs is incompatible with third-party video drivers. You can still install the Air Display host software, but until Apple fixes the issue, the Air Display drivers will disable themselves on Lion on these specific machines.
Affected machines include:
  • 13" MacBook (aluminum late 2008, early, mid, and late 2009)
  • 13" MacBook Air (late 2008, mid 2009)
  • 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2009)
  • 15" MacBook Pro (late 2008, 2.53 GHz mid 2009, mid 2009)
  • 17" MacBook Pro (early and mid 2009).
  • 20" iMac (early or mid 2009)
  • 24" iMac (early 2009)
  • 21.5" iMac (late 2009)
  • Mac mini (early or late 2009, Server late 2009)
  • Mac mini Mac OS X Server (late 2009)
Apple is aware of the bug. We are hopeful that they will release a fix soon.

Syncing: iPhone <> iCal <> Google Calendar <> windows outlook 2007

Syncing Apple's iPhone calendar to Apple's iCal (internet calendar program) works as advertised.

However, attempting to sync with Google's calendar, and outlook 2007 proved inconsistent at best.
I had been using iCal without issue, but have been asked on several occasions for help with Gmail / outlook.

After a couple days of troubleshooting, I found the easiest answer was to be centered on Google's calendar, with everything else syncing with the gmail (Google eMail) account / password.
[Gmail is a free email / calendar service and provides over 7GB of storage.]

Google Calendar Sync is a freeware windows program (background process) which will sync Google's calendar to microsoft outlook at a specified interval. (outlook for Mac hasn't been released yet.)

Setting up Google calendar (and syncing to iCal):
1) Export your iCal calendar.
(Run iCal, click 'View' click 'Show Calendar List' if it isn't already, then click to highlight your calendar on the left margin, click 'File', select 'Export...', and note where the file is saved.)

Note: You can combine multiple calendars by exporting them individually, and then importing them after selecting your primary calendar you want from the left iCal margin.

2) Login to Gmail, click Calendar. (upper-left corner of the webpage)
Go through the two second setup for the calendar if you haven't created one.

3) Click 'Settings' under 'My Calendars' in the left margin, and click 'Choose File' from the resulting dialog box.

4) Choose your previously exported iCal calendar from its download location. (Step 1)

Your calendar is now on Google.

5) Once the chosen calendar is imported, run iCal, click 'Preferences' and select 'Accounts'; in the resulting dialog box, click the little plus sign to add your Gmail address and password.

Your calendar is now syncing to iCal.

6) Once the calendar appears (under your email address in iCal's left margin), you can compare it to your original by checking the boxes next to each account in the left margin.

Note: You can delete the original you had exported earlier, as the new Gmail one is a duplicate (master), otherwise, leave it unchecked to avoid seeing the duplicate entries.

Syncing Google calendar to Apple's iPhone:
Click 'Settings'
select 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'.
Add your Gmail account if you haven't already.
Select the Gmail account, click the 'Calendars' switch to 'On'

Note: Google offers "push" for calendars, selecting 'Push' from the 'Fetch New Data' option (under the Accounts listing for the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' setting), will provide faster syncing, at the cost of slight battery expense.

Your calendar entries will appear on your iPhone, iCal, Google calendar, and outlook after the specified allotted time set to sync by the individual programs.

...what a mess, time for a drink.

iPhone / iTouch Firmware 2.2.1 No or Intermittent WiFi issues:

Some iPhones / iTouchs have experienced No or Intermittent WiFi (wireless ethernet) connectivity.

This issue largely appears after upgrading the firmware to the newest 2.1.1 version.

The theory developed here on Apple's own forums, largely by posters like ScottieWil and Baldwind00 seem to indicate three intertwining issues:

1) The firmware apparently uncaps the WiFi chip, increasing the download speed of the device.

2) The WiFi chip working harder, generates more heat.

3) As LiPo battery ages, the current draw and capacity may fluctuate -aggravated by the WiFi chip drawing more power, and the device heating up more.

4) Further, if the device is squeezed, the back panel may compress tiny metal 'fingers' angled to contact the WiFi chip designed to aid in dissipating heat to a metal panel inside.

Read the Forum for the details.

If the device is in warranty, take/send it to Apple:
If the WiFi is flaky, it may be easier to demonstrate if the battery charge is between 50% and 80% -see the link above or below to the forum....

If the device is out of warranty:

Briefly, one can try to lessen the effects by: (In increasing risk and difficulty)

1) Turn off the auto-brightness. (Saves battery draw.)

2) Turn off Bluetooth when not in use. (Saves battery draw.)

3) Keep the device cool; place on a cool, dry surface. (The device has water indicators inside the headphone and dock openings, water -even from condensation [by placing the device in the freezer -even in a sealed bag] should to be avoided, as this may foul the indicators.)

4) Disassembly is not recommended, however carefully and slightly bending the tiny metal 'fingers' down to better contact the WiFi chip may dissipate heat better.

5) Add a very thin layer of high-quality heat-sync compound to the WiFi chip. (Only if you understand electronics -too thick is as bad as no compound.)

6) Replace the battery. (Provides longer and more stable current.)

Hopefully a solution will be presented, through software to throttle back the WiFi perhaps, or a firmware update.

Thanks to the tireless posters who spent countless hours troubleshooting this issue.
Apple has an amazing user base, and this thread is exceptionally professional and helpful.

Apple App Store programs refusing to run (dumping immediately back to the main screen):

This post pertains to the applications downloaded from the Apple App Store.
Applications downloaded from 'Cydia' or 'Installer', see posting here.

Symptom:
An iPhone / iTouch application appears to crash back to the spring/summerboard upon running.

Possible cause: The application was bought under, or synced to, another iTunes or App Store (.Mac) ID.

Possible solution 1: Uninstall, then reinstall the application.
(Programs purchased can be downloaded again free if using the same ID under which it was bought originally.
)

Possible solution 2: Re-sync to the original computer profile/iTunes (apps not purchased under the original iTunes/App Store ID will be lost; the app can be re-downloaded [for free] only under the properly purchased ID).

iPhone Stack.app / Entended Preferences.app options not showing in Settings

Symptom 1: Installing the 3rd party app 'Stack' places the floating icon in the center of the dock, and there is no way to adjust this.

Symptom 2: Installing the 3rd party app 'Extended Preferences' doesn't appear to work.

[Uninstalling / reinstalling has no effect.]

The applications install their preferences into the native 'Settings' program.
However, the settings for Stack or Extended Preferences are not shown.

Culprit: 'Stack' and 'Extended Preferences' conflict with each other.

Fix: [From reader Dominick, Thanks!], turn off Extended Preferences in winterboard (if installed).

Fix: Uninstalling Extended Preferences or Stack until a patch is issued.
-Reinstalling Extended Preferences with Stack installed will prevent the extend prefs from appearing.
-Reinstalling Stack with Extended Preferences installed will prevent the exstended options (settings) appearing.
-At this point, it's one or the other.

Some screen shots showing Stack after uninstalling Extended Preferences

Note: you must place an icon behind the stack to space your five icon dock correctly.
A blank icon (using iBlank works best.)

iPhone resetting contacts / ringtones...

Symptom:
The iPhone resets contacts, i.e.; the contact list goes blank (displays zero contacts), your favorite list reverts from names to phone numbers, and your ringtone assignments all reset to the default iPhone ringtone.

-The phone contacts will re-populate after a minute, but your ringtones assignments will be reset. (The ringtones are still present, just not assigned individually anymore)

also, some duplicate or deleted contacts may return.

Cause:
MobileMe. A glitch in syncing causes the iPhones address book to reset to Apple's server listing, which doesn't save ringtones, and results in all contacts reverting to the default tone.

Fix:
Until the issue is corrected, turn off syncing contacts through MobileMe. (Use iTunes for syncing)

1) Hook-up the iPhone, and backup with iTunes. (Make sure iTunes actually backs-up your phone. -Quit iTunes and re-run if it doesn't backup automatically.)

2)  On the iPhone, click 'Settings'.

3) Click 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'.

4) Click the MobileMe account to display the configuring options.

5) Click the 'Contact' slider to OFF, and confirm when prompted.

6) Rerun iTunes, and sync your iPhone to restore your contacts.

7) Assign those ringtones ! )

Resolving iPhone / iTouch / iPod Syncing issues:

Device erroring out when trying to sync?
Try these steps: [Attempt re-syncing after each step.]

1.) Insure the device isn't sleeping.
Depending on what is installed, you may need to turn off sleeping when syncing.

2.) Check the USB cable, and computer port.
Try a different USB port. (USB 2 is faster, but USB 1.1 will work) (Firewire will charge, but not transfer data anymore.)

3.) Try a different computer, if possible.

4.) Turn the device off, and back on.

5.) Hard reset the device.
-Hold the 'Home' button, and the 'sleep' button until the iPhone / iTouch shuts down.
-Hold the 'Menu' button and the center button on the iPod until the device shuts down.

6.) Check your permissions. (Jailbroken [hacked] iPhone / iTouch)

If unfamiliar with Unix, feel free to skip this step.

Use CyberDuck to path private/var/mobile/Library/Safari
Highlight [click on] Bookmarks.plist, type Command-I to change the permissions to 775,

or...

Run 'Terminal'.
SSH to the device.
Carefully [case-sensitive] enter or copy/paste these commands: (See the screenshot)

cd /var/mobile/Library/Safari
chown mobile Bookmarks.plist
chmod 775 Bookmarks.plist

Turn off SSH, if possible.

7.) Uncheck all sync options in iTunes, try syncing, then recheck them, and sync again.

8.) Reinstall iTunes.

9.) Reset your sync history.
Run 'iSync' select 'Preferences' click the "Reset Sync History" button.

10.) Reset all settings on the device.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'General', tap 'Reset', tap 'Reset All Settings'.

11.) Last Resort: Restore the device. (You will need to re-hack if you choose to.)
Run 'iTunes', click 'Restore' from the 'Summary' screen.

iPhone / iTouch power saving tips:

The power consumption for the iPhone / iTouch isn't bad considering its 400mhz processor, and large backlit display.

We have never run out of power in the past year using our iPhones.
We do have mobile and/or AC adapters on hand when we travel, however, and we're not afraid to use them.

Still, there are a few things you can do to preserve battery life...

Keep your device out of direct sunlight, or any hot environment.
This will degrade your battery life significantly. (Ideal temperature is 72℉, 22℃)

Keep updated to the latest software.
Apple is constantly tweaking their software.
(If your device is hacked, check with the online community before updating, however....)

Adjust the backlight display lower than the default of 50%.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'Brightness', and slide to a comfortable level.

Turn off "Push eMail" rely on intervals, rather than instantaneously.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'Mail', select the 'push' account, tap 'Use Push Mail' to Off.

Set eMail retrieval to manual. (or every hour, half-hour?)
Tap 'Settings', tap 'Mail', tap 'Auto-Check', select your interval.

Check fewer eMail accounts.
(Maybe create a free account [ex: gMail], and forward, or have your accounts retrieved by the new one.

Turn off WiFi when you aren't using it.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'Wi-Fi', tap 'Off'.

Turn off Bluetooth when not in use.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'General', tap 'Bluetooth', tap 'Off'.

Set the display screen lock to a short time span.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'General', tap 'Screen Lock'.

Lock your device when through using it.
Press the 'Sleep' button. (The one on top...)

Use Screen Dimmer, if equipped.
The third party app 'Extended Preferences' provides a screen dimmer option, you can set (aside from the screen lock option).

FYI; Placing your finger above the earpiece on the iPhone when waking allows the phone to dim its display. (It then assumes its in a dark room, keeping the backlight dimmer.)

Turn off the music equalizer.
Tap 'Settings', tap 'iPod', tap 'Equalizer', select 'Off'.

When on a call, press the 'Sleep' button (if using a hands-free device) to turn off the display, the call is not effected.

Press and hold the 'Home' button a couple seconds to stop the app when finished.
Some apps use CPU cycles if left running. (Quickly pressing the 'Home' button.)

Battery maintenance:
It is recommended to run the battery down as low as possible about once a month.

Changing the default iPhone / iTouch password.

[Firmware earlier than version 1.1.3 and using BSD Subsystem earlier than 2.0 can skip to the third step**.]

The supplied UNIX passwd command in BSD Subsystem is broken for firmware 1.1.3 and 1.1.4.
Attempting to change the password under firmware 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 will result in your device continuously rebooting.
(The reboot fix involves holding both the Power button and the 'Home' button down for at least 30 seconds, then [upon seeing a triangle icon], plugging the device into iTunes for restoration.)

What to do, what to do.
Ah-Ha!  Replace the broken passwd command with the older, but working version...

iPhone / iTouch using firmware version 1.1.3 or 1.1.4, using BSD Subsystem 2.0, follow these steps:

First, download the older, but working unix passwd command.

Second, using, as always, CyberDuck; SSH** to your  /usr/bin  directory, and replace [drag and drop] the old cmd with the new one.

Now, click on the 'passwd' file in the CyberDuck window listing (to highlight it), then right-click and select 'Info'  -verify the file permissions as (755).  [all except group-write and others-write checked.]

Third, run Terminal, and type  ssh root@youripaddress
When prompted, enter the default password  alpine    (Firmware prior to 1.1.3, has the password  dottie  )
Type  passwd  and press 'return'
Type your new password as directed.
Type  exit  and quit Terminal.

Fourth, push the 'Disconnect' button on CyberDuck, and reconnect again, using your new password.

Don't forget to turn the device's SSH OFF when done.

** Basic SSH instruction within the previous post here.

Preventing and/or correcting iPhone / iTouch crashes:

Our [hacked] iPhones rarely crash anymore.
However, these steps should help if/when there's trouble...

Try to keep at least 250MB of free space on your device for use as cache.

Reset the device using 'Respring'.  (Or, run SMBPrefs, and tap 'Restart SpringBoard'.)

Turn the device off, and back on.

Create a copy of your devices backup file:
Apple Macintosh:  Username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

windows xp:  (Note: the 'Application Support' folder is invisible by default.)
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Apple Computer\SyncServices\Local
(unsure of actual filename, backup the folder, just to be safe.)

For Safari, clear the history, cookies, and cache. (run 'Settings', tap 'Safari', scroll to bottom.)

Restore the device through iTunes.  (You backed up, Right?)

Erase all content and settings: Run 'Settings', tap 'General', tap 'Erase All Content And Settings'.  (You backed up, Right?)
Warning: This will erase all content and settings.  If the problem remains, its not your content and/or settings causing the issue.

iPhone / iTouch: Fixing DIR permissions.

Symptom:
Third-party apps, games, ROMs, Z-code, books, or themes are not showing up after installation.

Fix:
1.) Uninstall / Reinstall the app.

Check if the app runs.

2.) If you haven't earlier, check your apps location....

3.) Install 'BossPrefs'.
Run BossPrefs, tap 'More', tap 'Fix User Dir Permissions'.

Check if the app runs.

4.) Insure SSH is On. (you DO have SSH installed, right?)

Goto 'Settings', select 'Wi-Fi', and press the little arrow to the right of your wireless network name.

Note the your IP address.

If using Cyberduck, Click 'Open Connection', enter your IP address into the server field.

Enter root into the Username field.

Enter alpine into the password field (unless you changed it).

click 'Connect' -[allow up to 30 secs for secure key generation if SSH wasn't used before.]

Navigate to [Case-sensitive] or copy/paste:   private/var/mobile/Applications/  in the 'quick connect' field, or, select /private/var from the pull-down menu, and click double-click 'Applications' from the resulting list.

At any rate, you should see something like this:

Check the 'Permissions' column, of the app (folder) in question. It should end with (755)  or (775).

Click the little triangle to open the directory, the files inside should have similar permissions, except for the '.plist' file, which may end with (644).

To change the permissions, carefully highlight (click) the file.
Check to make sure you have highlighted the correct file.

hold down the 'Apple' key (either side of 'space') and then press 'I'
Check to make sure the window displays the correct file.

Check the appropriate boxes to equal (755) as shown.
Check to make sure the window displays (755) as shown.

Do *not* check the 'Apply changes recursively'. (as shown)
Check to make sure the 'Apply changes recursively' is *not* checked. (As shown.)

If the .plist file shows (000) change it to (644)....

Carefully repeat for each file in question.

Reboot the iPhone.

Don't forget to turn OFF SSH (install 'BossPrefs' if necessary)

Troubleshooting: iPhone no volume

We were approached with a sick [hacked] iPhone, it had no volume, no vibration - unless receiving a phone call.  (Everything else worked fine.)

      .   .   .

Firmware: 1.1.4 (4A102)
Baseband: 04.04.05_G

Discovery: "Playing with my iPhone, I tapped the application named "GuitarChords", but this time it produced no sound.
Realizing the iPhone was toggled to silent mode [side switch] I flipped the switch ON.
Still no sound, upon pressing the volume UP side button, the iPhone indicated it was set to maximum.
I tried the silent switch again, realizing at that point, I had no vibration either.
The iPhone would produce sound for calls, and music only, no other sound at all."
(Note, changing the ringtone would play music at that time [in menu] also.)

Status: Fixed.   Procedure followed:
(Checking for volume after each step.)

Checked both the toggle switch and volume controls on side.

Checked: 'Settings', 'Sound', volume is UP, toggles for listed options are ON.

Turned iPhone off, and back on.  Twice.

Hard reset (hold down 'Home' & On switch until Apple symbol

Tried repeatedly plugging/unplugging headphones into jack.

Replaced   com.apple.celestial.plist   residing in   private/var/root/Library/Preferences

Replaced   com.apple.celestial.plist   residing in   private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences

Uninstalled 'VolumeBoost' hack.

Reinstalled 'VolumeBoost' hack.

Uninstalled any/all audio apps.

iPhone Off/On

Hard reset.

The iPhone had been backed-up (through iTunes) recently, which was fortunate, as I wouldn't recommend backing it up now, in this state.  -At least not through iTunes, which maintains a single backup per iPhone, overwriting the previous one.

Docked the iPhone, ran iTunes, pressed the 'Restore' button.  -Again, skipping the backup option.

Restoring the iPhone through iTunes has resolved the issue one hundred percent.
-yes, it will need to be jailbroken again to install 3rd party apps.

[Note, I cannot find fault with the program "GuitarChords", I am confident this was merely a coincidence.]

Backup the iPhone on occasion, at least through iTunes.  (Use SSH if you're able, to save apps, books, etc.)

-Tom
